Blood tests are taken for a variety of reasons, including:

What happens during a blood test?

A blood test appointment usually involves taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm. The sample is taken from the inside of your arm or wrist in most cases.

Blood samples from children are often taken from the back of the hand.

You may be asked to avoid eating (fasting) for up to 12 hours before your appointment.
